WANTED: EXPERT IN WOLF'S CLOTHING
Could you be wardrobe mistress or master for our production of THE JUNGLE BOOK?
PLEASE TELEPHONE CHARLES: 0151 632 6562 / 07704 545663 About Riverside Players by Val Marshall, Chairperson Riverside Players is a thriving amateur theatre group in Heswall, Wirral (in the UK), performing four main plays each season as well as a childrens' play in January. We often take a one-act play to local and national festivals too. The aim of Riverside Players is to provide theatre to the people of Wirral. This involves challenging, entertaining and educational material of a very varied nature. Challenging for the actors, the technical team – the audience too at times. Plays are usually performed at Heswall Hall which is convenient for west Wirral. To reach a wider audience, we are about to start using the Gladstone Theatre in Port Sunlight for some productions. The first of these will be in October 2008. Our headquarters is at Richmond Hall on School Hill, Lower Heswall. We rehearse and make props and scenery there and it is a frequent venue for social occasions. Richmond Hall is a spacious building with two rehearsal rooms, a set-building area, a props room, good storage areas and a coffee lounge. Members can be found there on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays when rehearsals are in progress. There is almost always at least one play in rehearsal and occasionally two or even three. Members meet in the coffee lounge during breaks in rehearsals. Amateur drama involves much more than acting! We need people who enjoy designing and building scenery, making costumes, or working with lighting and sound. Our backstage teams provide the essential technical support for each performance and are a vital link in the production of theatre. Open auditions for our plays are generally held twice a year: in May or June for the first half of the season, and around October for the second half. Auditions are publicised in the Riverside Players newsletter Centre Stage, which you can see on this web site, and are often advertised in the local press: we are keen to attract a wide range of people, especially if a large cast is needed. Centre Stage keeps everyone informed about future productions and social events. Members without internet access can receive it by post. There is a lively and friendly social side to Riverside Players. Some members meet every week, and functions are held in various places throughout the season. A chairperson is elected each year to head the Riverside Players committee. It meets monthly to make wise decisions for the good of the society and ensure the smooth running of productions. Committee members are very approachable and will always pass on members' concerns. An Annual General Meeting is held at the end of the season in June or July, when a new committee is formed. Affiliated to the Riverside Players is a youth group which also meets at Richmond Hall and is divided into two age groups. The younger group meets on Saturday mornings and the older children on Wednesday evenings. The annual children's play naturally encourages these groups to audition for parts and many of Riverside Players' current stars started out as junior members. Riverside Players is a Registered Charity, number 514741. We produce four main productions each season. As a Patron you will receive advance notice of these plays together with a booking form, to enable you to book your seats before tickets go on general sale to the public. You will also receive our monthly newsletter, Centre Stage, which will keep you up-to-date with all that is happening within the sociey and inform you of any social events being organised. Patrons are entitled to attend any of the social functions and the Annual General Meeting (although only full members are allowed to vote on any issues). The annual subscription for Patrons is made up of prepayment for your ticket for the four main productions (currently £6 each) and a nominal charge of £2 for a year's newsletters. We have a large number of Patrons at present who find the system simple and convenient to use, so if you would like to become part of the Riverside Players family please don't hesitate to contact me on 0151 647 1903. Riverside Players have appointed a management committee to manage the Hall in accordance with the trust deed. The management committee is required to hold regular meetings and an annual meeting to which all users must be invited. Riverside Players have exclusive use of the whole of Richmond Hall for rehearsals on three evenings a week. Richmond Hall is also the base for other Riverside Players activities, and houses a wardrobe and workshop. The primary purpose of the Richmond Hall Club is to work with young people and, in essence, the junior members of Riverside Players attend drama workshops run by the Club. These are held weekly in term time, with a session for 8–11 year olds on Saturdays from 10 am until noon and for 12–15 year olds on Wednesdays from 6.45 pm to 8.45 pm. There is a trained leader for all sessions. The focus is on drama skills of all types, and there is often an end-of-term presentation for parents, friends and members of the Club. Members of the Club have appeared in plays staged by Riverside Players over the years. Those too old to attend the Richmond Hall Club have the opportunity to become full members of Riverside Players. Close this section Top How to join Riverside Players by Rosie Coombes, Membership Secretary We're always happy to welcome new members into our amateur drama group whether on or off the stage. No previous experience is required – though always appreciated! With five or six plays to perform each season (between about October and May) we need a large number of members willing to do their bit to make every production a success. If you have a secret desire to be an actor, but you're a bit unsure, there are plenty of other jobs you could do first while you get the feel of things! Hopefully, you'll be pleased to know that it's not all about the plays, although obviously we all share an interest in all things theatrical. After most rehearsals there's a chance to go for a drink and chat with the rest of the team, and some Riversiders meet weekly even when not rehearsing plays. Large social events are another chance to get everyone together. Becoming a member is easy. If you telephone 0151-648 1118 or I'll suggest a time when you could meet some of the members and have a look round. There's always a break for tea or coffee during a rehearsal, or you could join us for a drink afterwards. Riverside Players rehearsals are usually on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. If you're coming to see one of our plays, just speak to any of the people you will see doing front-of-house duties. You don't have to be a member to come to one of Riverside Players' auditions or volunteer for a non-acting role, but you will have to cough up the very reasonable subscription and fill in a simple form before you can take part in a production. News of future plays and other events are on this web site and auditions are usually advertised in the local press. So, if we sound like a society for you, please get in touch and get stuck in! I look forward to meeting you soon. Close this section Top Contact details for Riverside Players For ticket sales and related matters: , Helen Belcham.
